History of the Peony

Originating in China in 1000BC these beautiful flowers weren’t brought over to Europe till the early 1800s after being discovered by explorers. Before being enjoyed as ornamental flowers they were mainly used in Eastern medicine. Where their root was used to treat headaches and asthma. 

So the Peonies we see today are thought of ‘domesticated wild flowers’ which I really like the idea of. Something that occurred naturally and was loved so much that it was favoured by an Emperor in China and bred into the Peonies that we see today!

Flowering only till the end of June be sure not to miss out on Peony season. Perhaps a reason that are are even more cherished is because they aren’t around for long.

We are so lucky here at The Brighton Flower Company to constantly be working with so many beautiful varieties of flowers. It’s almost as if once you start to get used to one season of blooms the next season comes just at the right time! 

This Autumn has been no different, bringing with it its warm, jewel tones and vibrant oranges. Below are some of the blooms that we have been loving and what they mean.

Euphorbia

Although slightly tricky for us florists to use due to it’s milky sap we have absolutely loved using this wild and trailing flower in our Autumnal bunches this season.

Whilst coming in a few shades I think it’s safe to say the bright orange colour has been a firm favourite and can be seen in our Seasonal Special Bouquet which you can check out below:

Chrysanthemum

Thought of as a ‘love it or hate it” flower I think Chrysanthemums get a bad rap! Now I know we’ve all seen the bright and garish ‘Mums’ in the super markets and that may be your thing but for a lot of people it isn’t.

I can’t stress enough how different Chrysanthemums can be. We have been getting in such luxurious varieties in deep purples and subtle peaches. If you are intrigued to see these stunning blooms then pop in to see for yourself!

Pink Puma Rose

Now this one is VERY exciting as it’s actually a new type of Rose!

It isn’t particularly autumnal per say, but it is new and shiny and we love it! A sister to the ‘Panther Rose’ this variety is a hot pink/red tone with flecks of pale pink through it.

We love it as it’s still so romantic but maybe more suited to the those who love something a bit different.

We have had such a busy year with them so it feels kind of crazy to say we only have one left to do. We always receive such lovely feed back on our classes so if you are looking to learn a new skill or just up for a calm and mindful activity why not book onto our last Bouquet Making Class of the year – hosted on Tuesday 28th October at 6pm.

You will learn how to condition, prepare and arrange seasonal flowers in a wild and natural style. It’s a technique that you can utilise with flowers you buy from the shops when you are gifting to friends. We will then gift wrap your bouquet for you to take home and enjoy.

We will of course be hosting lots of lovely flower arranging classes next spring and summer (which are also available to be booked on to if you are looking for a fun gift to give!) but if Autumnal colours are your jam – this October class would be a lovely one for you.

Moving on to Wreath Making…

Once we have completed our final Bouquet Making class of the year we will be moving onto Christmas Wreath Making classes, but I think we can talk about that at a later date… For now let’s enjoy the comfy, cosy colours of Autumn and really celebrate the season!

Our wedding photos have finally come through, and it has reminded us all over again how absolutely stunning the flowers were!!

At the Brighton Flower Company we pride ourselves on our flexible delivery times. The fact that you are able to order a same day local delivery up until 3pm has been a challenge for us but it’s something we are so happy to provide to allow for those last minute gifts! I guess it’s also a nice confidence boost to be called a hero by customers who may have forgotten a birthday/anniversary and be able to save the day!

Over the years we have tried lots of different options for our National Deliveries to find something that is efficient and also cost effective for our customers.

We have recently partnered with a new local courier and we are pleased to say we have achieved what we set out to do! We have cut our Saturday delivery cost by more than half and also have a system in place where the customer is notified every step of the way of their delivery. You can order as late as 2pm the day before for next day delivery Tuesday – Saturday.

What Florist Pick Bouquet do we have this month?

This month we have been loving pink! Which if I was to be totally honest with you is quite unique for us meadow loving florists. Although usually said to be girly and pretty we have been loving using a mix of deep pinks, hot pinks and pastel shades to create this truly beautiful mix – suitable for any occasion.

The key is to this bouquet is that each individual flower is so beautiful in it’s own right that when brought together not one outshines the rest.
